RISE | Easter 2019
April 21, 2019 | Steve Pixler
The resurrection is a not just about Jesus—it is about you and me! You and I needed resurrection, not Jesus.
Romans 15:12 (NKJV): There shall be a root of Jesse; and He who shall RISE TO REIGN over the Gentiles, in Him the Gentiles shall hope.”
Jesus shall “RISE TO REIGN.”
Ephesians 1:15–2:10 (ESV): For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the HOPE to which he has called you, what are the RICHES of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his POWER toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven so that he could “rise to reign.” And we rise to reign with him. Look at Ephesians 2:
Ephesians 2:1-10 (ESV) 1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were DEAD in our trespasses, made us ALIVE together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and RAISED us up with him and SEATED us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
2 Timothy 2:11–13 (ESV): The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have DIED with him, we will also LIVE with him; 12 if we endure, we will also REIGN with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.
How do we reign with Christ?
1. We RISE TO REIGN over our own spirit.
Romans 6:8–14 (ESV): Now if we have DIED with Christ, we believe that we will also LIVE with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
2. We RISE TO REIGN over the power of the devil.
Mark 16:15–20 (ESV): And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” 19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.
1 John 3:8 (ESV): The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
Hebrews 2:14–15 (ESV): Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
3. We RISE TO REIGN over the earth.
Revelation 5:9–10 (ESV): And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, 10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall REIGN on the earth.”
Romans 5:17, 21 (ESV): 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness REIGN in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might REIGN through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
You are KINGS and PRIESTS in Christ!
You were created to rule with Christ forever. That rule begins NOW through the resurrection of Jesus. When you receive the Holy Spirit, you receive the Spirit of resurrection—the “Spirit of the age to come”—NOW (Hebrews 6:5).
The “Spirit of the age to come” is the KINGDOM SPIRIT, which rules by LOVE rather than POWER. The kingdom of God turns the world upside down and inverts the idea of RULING. We rise to reign with Christ by kneeling to serve.
It is time to “rise”! Rise to reign over self, over evil and over the area of influence God has given you in the world. The resurrection of Jesus is YOUR resurrection, and you are called today to RISE.
As the Father called to his beloved Son that first Easter morning, he now calls to you: “RISE!”
Song of Solomon 2:10–13 (ESV): My beloved speaks and says to me: “Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away, 11 for behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. 12 The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. 13 The fig tree ripens its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.
