SERVE@FREEDOMLIFE | WORKSHEET
serve@freedomlife class guides you to discover your redemptive purpose and live the life God created for you. At Freedom Life, our goal is help YOU achieve your full potential as a person created in the image and likeness of God, born to share in his eternal glory.
As Paul the Apostle said, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) YOU were created in Christ Jesus as God’s “workmanship,” his masterpiece. And God prepared you “beforehand” to walk out this divine destiny.
God created YOU to reveal his glory in a way that only YOU can. It is essential to God’s eternal purpose that YOU fully discover and display his glory.
serve@freedomlife class is build around four simple steps:
Connect to the church
Discover your purpose
Or, to put these four steps into simple, mission-clarifying catchphrases, we are here to help people:
Make A Difference
You will hear these four phrases constantly at Freedom Life. (Take a moment and repeat the four phrases together.)
OUR PRAYER FOR YOU
As we get started, let’s pray two passages of Scripture that deeply reflect our desire to grow as believers in the image and likeness of God:
“[We ask you] God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,
[that you] may give [us] the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that [we] may know [you] better. [We] pray that the eyes of [our] heart may be enlightened in order that [we] may know the hope to which [you] has called [us], the riches of [your] glorious inheritance in [your] holy people.” (Ephesians 1:17-18)
“[We] ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make [us] intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, [our] eyes focused and clear, so that [we] can see exactly what it is he is calling [us] to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers.” (Ephesians 1:17-18 The Message)
YOUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY CONSISTS OF FOUR STEPS
The four phrases that we repeated above are a great outline of how we grow in faith as believers.
The first step is relationship with God. Knowing God is about relationship, not religion. God sent Christ Jesus, his Son, to reveal the truth about God. The world is filled with lies about God, about who he is and what he is like. Jesus came to reveal the Father to you!
Knowing God starts with faith in Jesus, in what he did at the Cross. As we invite you to serve at Freedom Life and discover your full potential in Christ, we must begin here: do you know God? Have you placed your faith in Christ for salvation?
Jesus died for your salvation. The only thing you need to do is accept what he has done. We are “saved by grace through faith” (Ephesians 2:8). Once you accept that you are saved through the faithfulness of Christ, then you are on your journey to faithful obedience that flows out his power and not your own.
HOW TO TAKE YOUR FIRST STEP OF FAITH AS A CHRISTIAN:
If you have never prayed for salvation, then let’s stop and pray together now:
“Dear Jesus, thank you for creating me and for loving me even when I’ve ignored you and gone my own way. I realize I need you in my life, and I’m sorry for my sins. I ask you to forgive me. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. As much as I know how, I want to follow You from now on. Please come into my life and make me a new person inside. I accept your free gift of salvation. Please help me to grow now as a Christian.”
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
Jesus commanded those who believe on him to be baptized. We practice baptism by immersion in water and Spirit in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, invoking the name of Jesus, confessing that “Jesus is Lord.”
“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by
John in the Jordan. Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water,
he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.” (Mark 1:9-10)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
“Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.”
BY BEING WATER BAPTIZED, YOU ARE:
1. Following the EXAMPLE set by Christ.
2. Demonstrating your CHANGED LIFE.
3. Declaring your covenant relationship with Christ PUBLICLY.
4. Receiving the official declaration of the church that your sins are WASHED AWAY. (Acts 22:16)
In water baptism, you and the church declare PUBLICLY what happened to you PRIVATELY. The church BINDS ON EARTH what has been BOUND IN HEAVEN. In baptism, the church officially declares you a Christian with all the rights and privileges pertaining to membership in the body of Christ. When you are baptized, you are authorized by Jesus, the King of heaven and earth, to do business on the behalf of his kingdom.
When you are baptized, you receive the promise of the Holy Spirit, which is the empowerment to be a Spirit-filled witness of the resurrection of Christ.
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” (Acts 2:38, 39)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
ready to be baptized?
At the end off this worksheet, you will have an opportunity to sign up for baptism, if you have not been baptized—or, if you have been baptized but lapsed in your faith and want to be baptized again.
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)
Knowing God leads to being known of God. Relationship with God—remember, it’s about relationship, not religion—is a two-way relationship. You get to know God, and he gets to know you. And as he discovers who you are—literally, as he uncovers the hidden “you” buried beneath years of others-imposed identity—he sets you free from the lies that have twisted your self-perception.
Knowing God and being known of God brings FREEDOM. As Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Jesus mediates the truth about the Father and the truth about YOU. And the truth makes you free.
Freedom brings inner healing. Inner healing is the healing of your soul, your mind, will and emotions. Most people are aware of the need for physical health, but few people really understand the importance of soul-health. As John the Apostle said, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 2). When Jesus makes you you free, you are “free indeed” (John 8:36). He makes you free body, soul and spirit.
“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
DISCIPLESHIP = relationships
As we like to say at Freedom Life, discipleship happens best in the context of relationships. Here’s why.
The bondage of sin develops through broken relationships with God, self and others. Therefore, inner healing through freedom in Christ only happens as our relationship with God, self and others is healed. Broken relationships is where we went wrong, and healed relationships is where we get it right. Freedom is never a solitary journey.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” (James 5:16)
Freedom happens through forgiveness: being forgiven by God, forgiving yourself and forgiving others.
Finding Freedom through connection
Freedom Life Church can never provide all the relationships you need to grow in freedom, but we can certainly come alongside you in the journey.
Let’s look at four ways we can facilitate connection at Freedom Life:
In the New Testament, which was written in Greek, the word “koinonia” is used to describe the care that Christians take for each other. (Acts 2:42, 46) To live in “koinonia” is to share life together like a fraternity/sorority, a labor guild, a service club (Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, etc) or any other society that enlists members for their common good.
Koinonia cannot be forced. It is an organic impulse of friendship and fellowship that develops naturally as people gather and learn to do life together. At Freedom Life, we work to facilitate koinonia by creating social moments before and after service each Sunday. Introductions are made around the coffee cart at Connect Point and friendships form around a lunch table after service. Make a point to hang around each Sunday and see how relationships develop.
“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” (Proverbs 18:24 KJV)
At Freedom Life Church, you have an opportunity to enter into covenant membership. Here’s the simple commitment members make:
I will protect the unity of my church:
By acting in love toward other members.
By refusing to gossip.
By following the leaders.
I will share the responsibility of my church:
By praying for its growth and health.
By inviting the unchurched to attend.
By warmly welcoming those who visit.
I will serve the ministry of my church:
By discovering my gifts and talents.
By being equipped to serve by my pastors.
By developing a servant’s heart.
I will support the testimony of my church:
By attending church and small groups faithfully.
By living a godly life.
By giving regularly.

3. Dream Team
We can also facilitate connection at Freedom Life Church through serving on volunteer teams, which we call our “Dream Team.” Nothing connects you to a church like getting involved through serving. More on that below.
4. FREEDOM LIFE Groups
The fourth, and possibly the most rewarding, way to get connected at Freedom Life is Small Groups. Real life change happens in the context of authentic relationships, which is why our goal is to be a church made up of small groups. Not a church with small groups, but a church of small groups. It takes time and intentionality to make that happen.
In the Bible, they worshiped in the temple, but personal ministry happened from “house to house.”
“And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts.” (Acts 2:46)
“You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.” (Acts 20:20)
At Freedom Life Church, we do Groups twice yearly, in the Spring and Fall. As each Groups season gets close, we will share details on Sunday about how you can sign up. For more information about Groups, or to view a directory of ongoing Groups, visit myfreedomlife.com/connect.
Remember, the point of getting connected—of belonging!—at Freedom Life Church is to help YOU find freedom, to help you get healed and whole in every relationship. Let’s find freedom together!
The third step in your journey is to discover the purpose for which God created you. You were designed by God before time began, and he created YOU for a divine destiny.
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.” (Psalm 139:13-18)
As we like to say at Freedom Life, design determines destiny. The way God made you reveals what he plans to do with you.
When you set out to know God and find freedom, you begin a lifetime journey to discover purpose. A great way to start on the discovery journey is to take a couple of tests, a personality test and a spiritual gifts assessment. Here are the links to take the tests:
(Take a few minutes to talk about your results.)
MAKE A DIFFERENCE
“Make a Difference” is the fourth step on your journey. One powerful way to make a difference is to serve on the Freedom Life Dream Team. The Dream Team is our amazing volunteers who make life-giving church happen every week.
All of us were created by God to make a difference in the life of another person. God has a place for you where your unique abilities and passions can impact the lives of others. We believe your life will never make sense until you find, develop and fulfill that purpose.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, my aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.” (Acts 20:24)
“Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities...There are different kinds of service to God [ministry]...All of you together are the one body of Christ, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-5, 27 LB)
